Working together on sustainable agriculture in Benin
ICCO has been working in Benin for over twenty years, together with several non-governmental organisations (NGO's). Their cooperation was focused on the broad subject of access to basic social services. In recent years the emphasis has shifted to food security, chain development and access to the market. The activities of ICCO's partners are geared towards achieving sustainable forms of agriculture.
Organic cotton production in Benin
The Pendjari National Park is located in the North of Benin on the border with Burkina Faso. The population's most important product is cotton. That is grown in a conventional manner. Which is why it is harmful for people and the environment. To solve this the plan originated to switch to organic fair trade production of cotton.
Production of soy and cashew improved in Benin
DEDRAS-ONG is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation with a church related identity and a social background. ONG is UEEB's development department (Union des églises évangeliques du Bénin), but it became financially and physically independent from them in 2002. Poverty in Benin tackled by setting up pineapple chains
Helveta Benin contributes to the alleviation of poverty in Benin's rural areas. They go about this by developing sustainable agricultural chains. Together with four producers organisations they worked on developing channels of trade for pineapple (produce). Their first phase ran from 2005 to 2007. Now is the time to consolidate.
Improved position for cashew producers in Benin
URPA Z/C is a Union of cashew producers in the Zou and Collines departments in Benin. URPA Z/C consists of municipal unions and corporations on a village level. Their goal is to increase the production of individual cashew producers. The union wants to increase their income through joint sales. With ICCO's financing ARPA Z/C is able to expand their experience within the pilot phase.
