ICCO Education Programme
Quality education for everyone is what ICCO wants to achieve with its education programme.
There are still 771 million illiterates in this world, 75% of whom are female. And despite international agreements on education, there are still a hundred million children who do not attend school. 60% of them are female. More than half of these children live in a conflict area.
ICCO does not accept this situation. Education is a source of personal growth and is indispensable in the construction of a peaceful society. Education generates self confidence and makes people more resilient. It provides knowledge and skills that last a life time and equips children to put their talents to good use.
Everyone has the right to go to school and should be given the opportunity to do so. Sometimes children do go to school, but learn very little, being taught subjects that barely connect to their own frames of reference, or in a language they cannot understand. Or they fail to finish their education, for instance because they need to provide for their families. We don't just want people to receive schooling for a longer period of time. Quality is essential too.
ICCO and Kerk in Actie are focusing on accessible quality education in 17 countries. We do this together with Edukans and PRISMA. We extend a helping hand to people and organisations that, each in their own way, are working to realise decent living conditions, and with a high regard for local solutions and in close concert with our partner organisations.
In this way, we contribute to the objectives of Education for All and the Millennium Development Goals and to a high quality education for all. Because education is a key to personal, sustainable development.
Our education programme covers the following subthemes:
- Education before work
- Education for marginalised groups (pastoralists in Ethiopia, the indigenous people of the Andes)
- Education and HIV/Aids: joining forces in the Educaids network
- Education in (post)conflict situations
Global Campaign for Education
One of the Millennium Goals set by the United Nations covers education: in 2015 all the world's children must receive schooling. To reach this goal the Global Campaign for Education (GCE) was founded, a network of 400 (educational) organisations from 180 countries. ICCO is part of the Dutch GCE Coalition.
